Winnipeg team wins girls’ under-14 national championship

Smitty’s Terminators Y2K girls’ fast pitch softball team won the U14 Canadian Fastpitch Championship in Surrey, B.C., this past weekend.

The team is made up of 13 girls ages 12-14 who practise all winter and play in tournaments across Canada and the U.S. They beat the heavily favoured White Rock Renegades (B.C.) in the final 5-1.

The Terminators outscored their opponents 37-5 in five playoff games — vs. Victoria Devils (5-2), vs. Richmond Islanders (13-0), vs. Quebec Rebelles (4-2), vs. Waterloo Ghosts (10-0) and vs. WhiteRock Renegades (5-1).

Led by coach Holly Kitchen, this is the first Manitoba team to win the U14 championship since it started in 2000 … the year the majority of the players were born.
