IIU investigating after man loses part of finger

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a man lost part of his finger while in custody.

Last month, on March 25, Winnipeg police brought an intoxicated man to the Main Street Project detox centre. The victim grabbed the cell door as officers closed it, which led to the partial amputation of a finger. He was treated in hospital.

Now, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is looking into the circumstances that led to the injury. Under the Police Services Act, the IIU must investigate whenever someone is seriously injured from the actions of a police officer.

The act defines loss of any body part as serious.
