Winnipeg Goldeyes Sign Catcher & Proven Hitter

WINNIPEG, MB. – Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney expects a full house in town when training camp opens next month.

On Monday, Forney announced that he’s signed first baseman Shawn Pleffner and catcher Conor Sullivan on Monday afternoon.

Pleffner hit .262 with three home runs and 34 RBI in 100 games last year for the Double-A Eastern League’s Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals’ organization).

Sullivan was a true rookie in 2016, hitting .226 for the American Association’s Joplin Blasters in 28 games with one home run and 10 RBI.  The 23-year-old catcher from Chicago will retain his rookie classification with the Goldeyes for 2017.

“I’m very glad to add both Shawn and Conor to the club,” Forney said. “We were looking for some left-handed bats to balance out the roster. Shawn has Double-A experience, and will be counted on to drive in runs. Conor got his feet wet in Joplin last year, and did a fine job defensively.  We’re hoping he can push Alixon (Suarez).”

In a separate transaction, the Goldeyes placed outfielder Stefan Sabol on irrevocable waivers for the purpose of granting his release.

The Goldeyes now have 27 players under contract for the 2017 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 6th.
