Toronto’s Fekensa Bayisa Wins Manitoba Marathon

WINNIPEG, MB – Teresa Fekensa Bayisa of Toronto grabbed the lead early and cruised to victory in the 39th running of the full Manitoba Marathon on Sunday morning.

As a crew of almost 12,000 competed in this year’s various events — full marathon, half-marathon, 10-kilometre run and the super run – Bayisa won the big race by more than a full minute over Jeremy Walker of East St. Paul, Man. – two hours, 38 minutes and three seconds to 2:39:07.

Jeff Sacco of Winnipeg, who was fifth last year, finished third this year in a time of 2:44:21. He ran it in 2:55:46 last year so a big improvement for Sacco.

Daniel Heschuk of Neepawa completed the half-marathon in 1:09:45 to win that event by almost three minutes. Michael Middlemiss of Regina was second in 1:12:29.

Emily Ratzlaff of Winnipeg won the women’s marathon in a time of 3:14:38 while Jaclyn Adamson of Winnipeg won the women’s half-marathon in 1:23:37.

Perhaps the most intriguing story of the event belonged to Teddi Sweatman of Winnipeg. She finished third in the women’s 10-kilometre race in a time of 44:37.6. That also put her in first place in the women’s 65-69 age group.

The run started at the University of Manitoba and ended inside Investors Group Field. The runners, almost unanimously, enjoyed running inside the stadium.
