Public Safety Building set for demolition
City Hall has moved closer to sealing the fate of the Public Safety Building.
It’s currently the home of the Winnipeg Police Service, which is set to move into its new headquarters at Smith and Graham.
A committee has voted to bring the building down, but not until the future use of the site has been determined.
The property was donated to the city on the condition it be used for a public purpose.
If it isn’t, it must be returned to the descendants of the original owner.
The city will now hold public consultations, with a park rumoured to be the favoured option.
City council still has the final say on what happens to the site.
Heritage activists consider it to be a strong example of mid-century brutalist architecture.
