Manitoba Bisons Named Tops in Volleyball

WINNIPEG, MB. – The 2016-17 Canada West men’s volleyball all-star and all-rookie teams were announced by the conference on Monday and The University of Manitoba Bisons had two student-athletes honoured for their efforts.

Bison men’s volleyball right side hitter Devren Dear and setter Luke Herr were named as 2016-17 Canada West Men’s Volleyball First Team All-Star. Manitoba was the lone team to land multiple players on Canada West’s top squad.

Dear, 22, earned his second consecutive conference selection in his fifth season at Manitoba (2015-16: First Team). Dear was fourth in Canada West with 3.96 kills per set and finished fifth in hitting percentage at .308 while starting and playing in all 24 conference matches. Dear was also eighth in conference points with 353.5. His versatility on the court is highlighted as he also was T-24th in Canada West in digs per set at 1.62 and T-40th in total blocks at 43. The St. Andrews, MB native led the team in kills and his highest kill total being 27 in one match during the 2016-17 season.

Herr, 22, was selected as conference all-star for the first time in his fifth season at Manitoba. In the 2016-17 season with the Bisons, the Winnipeg native was fourth with 9.88 assists per set and third with 0.44 service aces per set in Canada West. Herr was also T-30th in conference digs per set at 1.55 and fourth on the team with 43 total blocks while not only starting and playing in all 22 matches but did not miss a set (84) this season for the Herd.

Bison men’s volleyball notes: The #2 Bison men’s volleyball team (21-3) host the 2017 Canada West Final Four on March 10-11 at U of Manitoba campus (Investors Group Athletic Centre). Tickets will be available at the door during the two-day major sporting event. Manitoba host Final Four for second time in program’s history (2003-04 season).

The Bisons will play the first semifinal match on Friday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m. against the UBC Thunderbirds. On the line is a seeding placing for the U SPORTS championship held at University of Alberta in Edmonton on March 17-19 as all four teams at the 2017 Final Four have advanced to the nationals.
